Identify Exterior Components — Refrigerator Vents

Refrigerator Vent

Lower vent — The lower vent provides three functions:

  • Fresh air intake for combustion
  • Fresh air intake for ventilation
  • Provides access for service

The lower vent must be installed with the bottom edge of the vent opening at or below the refigerator floor level and must be sealed to the interior of the coach. This is to allow any heavier than air fuel gases to flow out from the compartment.

Upper side vent — Upper vents provide a path for combustion and ventilation air to exit. Due to the various application, the upper side vent must be installed according to the specifici amnufacturer's intallation instructions. Improper installation many canuse poor cooling performance.

The vent on the right side of the above photo is a range hood vent.

Roof vent —

Refrigerator Roof Vent

Roof vents can be used when the refrigerator is not installed in a slide room. They must be sized and installed according to manufacturer's installation instructions.

Water Heater

Water Heater Vent

The intake and exhaust vent is similar on the different models. They are both usually a portion of the exterior door that has a screen-type opening on them. The screen prohibits birds and some insects from entering, but allowing air to pass readily through it. The top portion will be the exhaust from the flue tube that allows the hot gas to escape out and up. A divider or plate will separate the fresh air intake from the exhaust.

Water Heater

The exterior door allows access to the water heater components for service.

Furnace

Furnace vent

Furnace vent

Furnace vents provide both intake and exhaust air for combustion. It is important that the vent be unobstructed and tightly sealed. There must be a separation of the exhaust and intake air. The access panel in the lower photo allows servicing from outside the RV.
